It was Independence Day, July 4, 1976. But for Tina Turner, it was her own personal independence day. After another brutal beating on the way to a hotel in Dallas, she waited until her husband and jailer, Ike Turner, fell asleep. In a white pantsuit, splattered with her own blood, she slipped out of the room. She had 36 cents in her pocket and a single gas station credit card.
