A Little History
Formed in El Cerrito, California in 1967, Creedence Clearwater Revival became one of the most successful American bands of the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Led by singer, songwriter, and guitarist John Fogerty, CCR blended rock and roll, blues, country, R&B, and Southern influences into what became known as swamp rock—despite being a California band rather than a Southern one.
Between 1968 and 1972, the band produced an incredible run of classics, including:
Bad Moon Rising
Green River
Fortunate Son
Down on the Corner
Travelin' Band
Have You Ever Seen the Rain?
Proud Mary
Their straightforward songwriting, powerful grooves, and distinctly American sound continue to influence generations of musicians.
About the Song
Proud Mary was released as a single in January 1969 and appeared on CCR's second studio album, Bayou Country.
Written by John Fogerty, the song tells the story of leaving city life behind and finding freedom on a riverboat called Proud Mary. The famous line, "Rollin', rollin', rollin' on the river," became one of the most recognizable lyrics in rock history.
The song reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and later earned induction into the Grammy Hall of Fame. It was famously covered by Ike & Tina Turner, whose explosive version became a classic in its own right.
About the Drummer
The drummer on the original recording was the legendary Doug Clifford, affectionately known as "Cosmo."
Doug Clifford's drumming was a cornerstone of the CCR sound. Rather than flashy fills or technical excess, his playing focused on deep grooves, impeccable timing, and serving the song—qualities that made tracks like Proud Mary timeless.
His steady, driving rhythms helped create the unmistakable feel that defined swamp rock and inspired countless rock drummers who followed.
