In 1984, the music industry had written off Tina Turner. She had just survived years of abuse, walked away from Ike with 36 cents, and released a new album that nobody wanted to promote. Her career was over — or so everyone said.

Then Lionel Richie made one phone call.

He asked her to open his Can't Slow Down world tour. Tina said yes — because it was the only yes she had.

On the first day of rehearsals in Los Angeles, she walked in quietly. Almost shy. Lionel had never seen her like this before. He thought: is this really Tina Turner?

Then the music started.

What happened over the next 45 nights changed everything. Lionel's crowd became Tina's crowd. What's Love Got To Do With It went to number one. Private Dancer sold 20 million copies. Tina Turner won 4 Grammys. And the woman the industry had written off became one of the biggest stars on the planet.

When Tina died in 2023, Lionel wrote: "I remember her walking into the rehearsal — she was very quiet, almost shy. Then the music started and she turned into Tina Turner."
